The towards the bottom of the craft are gravity emitters. These emitters bend gravity, and space/time in the direction you wish to travel. The craft turns “belly forward” in order to use the emitter’s full power and travel at maximum speed.
When it’s hovering, it just has to focus on producing antigravity, and doesn’t really have to worry about traveling through space. Technically, it could hover at almost any angle.
Look at pic related: If your spacecraft is sitting where the letter G sits, the emitters would be used to create a depression in front of your craft, similar to the depressions that are created by Earth and Sol, then you simply “slip” through spacetime until you reach your desired destination. By turning the craft “Belly forward” you create a larger depression, which causes you to slip through spacetime faster.
