It does this by a weird process where it totals the entire labour of a society and then divides into a per capita rate per person. The history bit is that economic forces(or sometimes it was material conditions in general which is a rather different statement) are more important than other factors(the 'superstructure') in determining the progress of history. Though I saw Marx once say something that seemed to contradict that.

The ancient greeks and englightment thinkers largely believed in a cycle of government. This cycle when left alone generally went from a philosopher king that cares about the people, who uses the military to push his ideals on the society. This would devolve into a tyrant who oppressed the people. The dictatorship is later overthrown by the people closest to the king and the society becomes governed by an aristocracy that cares about the people. Over time this becomes an oligarchy that only looks after it's best interest. The oligarchy eventually becomes some form of democratic rule. The best case, being a democracy where the people vote for the best interest of the society. This devolves into the worst form of democracy, and the worst form of government of all six, where the people vote for their own self interest. This is where most western societies are transitioning to now.
Communism takes the idea of the Philosopher king (think Mao, Kim family, Stalin etc) and implements the policies of those sought after by the worst form of government, self democracy. Selfish democracy want to make everyone equal, wants as many gibs as possible, free everything, to tax the wealthy, to be accepted no matter how perverse you are etc.
The end result is a complete disaster with most communist regemes not making it past the third generation. Interestingly, you can see the cycle of civilization speed up. The philosopher king quickly becomes a tyrant, the prominent people in the communist party quickly become the new aristocracy, and devolve almost instantly into an oligarchy chasing their own self interests. This cause immense strain and quick collapse. The Soviet Union for instance. China and North Korea are great examples of this phase right now. They will not last another 50 years.
So to sum it up, communism is doomed to a quick and violent failure. Millions will always die no matter how good hearted the original leaders claim to be.
