VS is getting better every year. They had some fuckups when introducing the C# UI, but a year later they got it sorted out. Great product, but shit support unless you pay premium bucks.

Although I might be biased because I switched from C++ to C# deving a couple years ago, and VS is nowadays focussed on C#/.NET so there's that. Did they ever fix Intellisense for non-managed C++? Cause that's the point where my boss decided to fuck that shit and we moved on to C# because we didn't need the performance boost of using C/C++ anyway.

Have you measured the time to open a project or hell, even a single file in VS 2008, versus opening a single file in VS2015/17/.. whatever... All the useless bloat that's shoved into the IDE is slowing it down, it's a pain to work in the newer IDEs. Yes some new features are nice, and some things are great, but they all come with a shitload of unwanted bloat they can't keep under control. Working with C#.net on a daily basis and switching to C++ as soon as my spare time starts. That overmanaged shit is unbearable. But atleast they are going "modern" with a web-browser based IDE where the javascript to blink the cursor takes a whole processor core :D

Back to VS, I didn't think it was that bad until I had to reinstall VS 2008 for an legacy project and I was blown away by the speed of the IDE and how fast I could write good code without all the "tools" getting in the way. Give it a try sometimes.

But it's more comfy than hacking shit into VI. Yes, VI, not VIM. Where you are not even able to use cursor keys to navigate your code. Been there, done that, for years because it was company policy. The comfort we now have comes with a hit in performance, but I'd hardly call it bloat.

Back then, the web was a frontier and everybody was a pioneer. There weren't nearly as many frameworks, libraries, or APIs and the web was really limited in what it could do, which presented obstacles that the smarties of the day worked around.
Now, there are no more fundamental web problems, it's all about aesthetic and user experience. The entire net seems hell bent on using the same frameworks for everything and so webpages look and feel the same.
