Hong Kong's history is one reason why it escalated in the first place and why it might not go away easily, too. Hong Kong's geography might be another reason why it's not yet over. The last thing the communist party can tolerate right now is a drawn-out conflict, in fact the whole thing is already going on for too long and having to send in the mainland army and tanks through the peninsula's natural choke points won't be a quick and silent operation (even though fairly hopeless for Hong Kong's inhabitants). It's not just China's reputation that is at stake (if the Westner nations' publics are outraged, their politicians will at least have to protest, if not sanction them), but also its inner stability. Hong Kong holding out for too long might just be the signal for other dissidents.
