It's also because fiber optic lines are far more expensive and require much better trained people to implement. With the mudding of society, there's not enough smart fucks in the western world to put fiber everywhere, and telecomms don't wanna foot the bill for fiber when they can just half-ass it using radio.

For a lot of companies, the ability to stream their content to devices rather than needing complex hardware on the receiving end is a huge profit saver. I work in "gaming" (but not the type most attribute the word with) and a central server located on site, streaming all content to devices in the premises would be huge. Less specialty builds, more product reuse, less overall production costs and time costs to adjust for the next hardware build. All they'd do is render graphics and report player feedback. Simply beautiful.

The microvaves in an oven are not only extremely close to their targets and rely on waveguides for focusing, but more importantly are VERY powerful. Orders of magnitude more powerful than anything your phone or router is putting out, say 700 watts vs. .5 watt(I'm not sure how powerful router/phone wattage is).
That's a HUGE difference. And even with that power, a microwave oven's magnetron and waveguide system can't power detectable waves beyond a couple dozen feet. The reason for this is simple. Water molecules in the air and in anything containing water will absorb microwave radiation and convert it to heat with extreme efficiency. That's how microwave ovens work after all. The water in the outer layer of your skin would be enough to block the level of radiation coming off of a phone or router. You need more power for penetration into tissues.
