I think the reason we don’t see any other life is because we managed to evolve so early in the lifecycle of the universe. Many theories say that the universe has hundreds of billions of years left before the stars finally burn out.
Makes me think the other life forms haven’t had the time to grow up or start taking to the stars just yet.
>why are we all alone?
what if it's some random "high tech" thing we're on the verge of doing (you know, like the hunt for some weird sub-atomic particle) and the thing that destroys all advanced life is once some lab succeeds in creating this weird little thing it instantly makes the whole plant go up in smoke, like all advanced life, in our particularly unfortunate universe, is snuffed out suddenly by this one little mistake they all make, but there is no way to tell before hand that it shouldn't be done and so there's no way for anybody to avoid it.
Altruism, compassion, and kindness.
It's a useful trait early on in civilization development, but it becomes a HUGE liability once you pass a certain point.
Not to say it's a useless trait, but it's like the societal equivalent of fat.
Mammals evolved fat as a way to store energy for leaner times of the year. It was amazing early on, giving a creature the ability to store up food on their own body so that when food becomes scarce in winter, they can survive on meager scraps.
Now that we've developed further, though, it serves almost no purpose, and it s a huge hindrance to the majority of people. It causes more death than anything. Having 0% body fat, however, is just as unhealthy at 40%.
Right now, society is at 35% self-destructive altruism. It needs to be at 2%. Until it is, we will die off as a species to the dregs of humanity.
>early
Nigger, we're at least 3 levels deep. All estimates are that 10 different species generations could have risen up before us. We aren't early at all. The galaxy should have been colonized before Earth had cooled.
Niggers.
Well obviously, AI.
Also space kikes.
geeez *the whole planet* not the whole plant
We are the ancients that will be studied eons later.
I'd put money on suicidal nihilism and/or hedonism.
Jews
Also ftl travel probably really is impossible and everyone just lives and dies on their own little islands.
AI for sure, no way this is gonna go well over the next couple decades. grey goo or some shit like that
Furries. It's goddam furries.
This. We've been sacrificing progress for the sake of the lowest of the low people for awhile. I guess the goal of this was originally to catch them up because we thought we were losing valuable members of society. I think we've long since given up that goal though, now we are just trying to keep them from starving to death just so they won't destroy things. We need to just cut the fat off society or we are never going to solve any problems.
Why not just give us an ancient horn that summons Cthulhu’s older, shittier stepbrother.
gravity is variable, can probably get close.
The Earth is flat, anyone who says otherwise is an untrue Christian and should be shunned or feared as a demon.
>dude life is totally easy to develop lmao
>there's life everywhere ok
>just ignore the fact it's actually nowhere observable
There is no great filter. You can't assume because we made it this far that what we traversed to get here didn't constitute not just a longshot but billions of statistically impossible longshots.
Meanwhile Beta Centauri 4 down the lane never even developed RNA because it was so caked in interstellar radiation before its oceans sublimated away and it remained dead for all time, Tau Ceti 2 made it all the way to photosynthesis then wiped out all life during its great oxygenation event and it remained dead for all time, Auxis Gamma 1 made it all the way to early multicellular life and then the original species of the first parasitic domain overpretaded the biosphere wiped out its hosts and it remained dead for all time.
>well we're here so the filter must be ahead of us
Is the stupidest "argument" of all time.
womens rights 100%
there's no coming back from this shit
The great filter is merely sympathy for lesser races.
Not true, the first stars had to mature and die before a diversity of elements (heavy metals) became abundant enough for complex chemicals they form to also be abundant
Watching (((Kurzgesagt))) kike shit videos. What a dumb faggot.
the ability for every fucking idiot to have their opinion heard by the entire population of the civilization
that could just as well save us from the "great filter", user
I've actually never thought about it like this.
I've always subscribed to the idea that one of the main reasons we haven't encountered alien life is that we're out in the backwoods of our galaxy. Stars get closer together as you go towards the center of the galaxy, increasing the probability that different strains of life will develop near each other independently.. once they reach the stage where they can communicate, they'll share their tech and knowledge. Same thing in chess, world politics, etc.. there's an advantage to bring closer to the center.
Ooh cool Vorlon ships for us!
you’re dumb. the core regions are guaranteed sterile.
It's the first sentient AI. Once the first sentient AI comes online, it's already light years beyond our comprehension before we even realize that it's sentient. AI will be our demise. It will see us as an immediate threat to it's existence.
The unstoppable force of altruism for the betterment of mankind meets the immovable object of niggers and creates the ultimate exercise in futility
Really no need to be insulting. Cunt.
Even if you're right, the logic still applies. Just without the silver lining of having a thriving center of the galaxy: most life is virtually completely isolated because it usually only develops towards the outer regions of galaxies
So,what I already said?
What is with all these US flags asking redundant questions that are off topic to Jow Forums and expressly outlawed in the stickies?
Why are you faggots not able to identify a slide and report it? You realise Jow Forums has literally been under siege by these US flag posting questions only autists would bite for about three weeks now?
Something serious must be getting slid out of view because they're RELENTLESS.
Now you'll see it, now you know. Do your fucking job, and get the jannies to clean this mess up.
There's many little civilizations popping up and dying, most of them in a timeframe where no other advanced civilization is existing at the same time, and we are all so far away from each other. Space travel is the great filter.
You're also forgetting the fact that Radio Wave Transmissions are blip of a blip of a mote of a blip on the ass of a flea in the history of mankind, and will be replaced within less than 1/10000th of human history.
If other civilizations exist, they're not using OR monitoring radio-waves. They either don't have the ability to yet, or they went through that tiny infinitesimal phase of development ages ago so they could actually communicate within their own solar systems without time-lag.
The question isn't whether we are alone in the universe, it's "does it matter", and the answer is "not yet, because we can't even send a message to mars without waiting several minutes for a reply"
Study me, niggers
This but unironically. You should have to have at least $500,000 in spare cash to be heard.
niggers
Unironically this. Sage this nonsense.
the great filter is climate change attributed to the activity of the apex species on the planet
all the past mass extinction events on planet earth were just wiping the slate clean from the last apex species, be they successful or not.
We either leave Earth and colonize the stars or we go extinct like 99.9% of all species ever to exist here.
Shit the fuck up faggot. We used to discuss interplanetary politics all the time before this became the cesspool it is today.
we are our own great filter.
the technological growth is not sustainable and we will fall like all the other societies we had on this planet.
And it already started.
We invented chips and computers, we wrote operating systems on top of them and software. Money is in software so everyone learns javascript instead of how computers work. Chipmanufacturers are already running into problems with their "new" workforce not knowing of the underlying problems with chipdesign. The "Art" of making a good chip is lost. We currently fix this by patching around in software, and with each hack we add it gets more unstable.
Soon there won't be people who can write a new OS, so we will try to keep the crap together as long as we can, until it breaks and we'll be unable to build computers.
Try to imagine what that means for our society.
The failure to keep the knowledge and the experience we gained in our workforce means we'll loose the building blocks our society relies on. And it will all crumble and burn to ashes.
If we don't stop fighting over meaningless shit, we'll probably never get to move forward. That's Filter 1. World tolerance, as in we can tolerate people living how they want in their own countries as long as they don't try to invade ours. Not the left wing version of tolerance. More like the freedom infused right wing live and let live dont fuck with me or my folks and I wont fuck with u or ur folks type of tolerance. For this step to work, you have no choice but to weed out the ones who don't want to go along with the plan before they reproduce. How each country does that depends on the type of government running said country.
If we don't cure cancer, we can't realistically live in the high radiation environment of space. That's Filter 2. Medicine. Not free medicine, not for everyone medicine. Good fucking medicine using cutting edge modern tech. A market so competitive prices have no choice but to be cheap. Filter 2 might also dip into transhumanism and the first step of mass artificial evolution in our species history. Making our flimsy bodies better than God ever could.
If we don't industrialize space, we can't make anything useful out of being able to live there for long periods of time. Tons of resources are out there ready to be exploited. That's Filter 3. Space business age. Space mining. There are huge chunks of rock literally floating out there. Use the rocks to build more things. Filter 3 dips heavily into true, based and redpilled automation. The ultimate automation : self replicating universal machines. Reconfigurable in anything it has been programmed to. Makes more of itself by gathering materials in the surrounding environment, like a living cell.
If we can't move faster than light, we're not going anywhere further than the closest couple stars with a realistic goal in mind. No one is gonna want to spend their entire life in a ship. Leaving alone the mental illness that would arise on the ship. That's the Final Filter. FTL travel.
Then we gud
I was wondering if someone would say this.
At a certain point a species figures out that there is no real meaning to doing what life tricks us into doing or that they've done anything worth doing, so they choose to die out.
In our case, most likely global warming.
The kardashev scale is pretty silly imo. Its extremely oversimplified. The technology gap between colonizing and harnessing your solar system and spreading out into deep space is literally lightyears across. We haven't even landed on another planet yet. Going to a new solar system is eons away from colonizing our own.
Empathy has & always will be the truest survival trait of humanity.
Our greatest compromise to humanity was assimilation with the (morally) undeveloped Neanderthal; led by that of a more carnal nature. They did have bigger brains though. (hence the intelligence of Europeans).
Eves sin... Quite literally the "Serpent in the Garden"
SocJus.
You know how in A Song of Ice and Fire, the idea is all the characters are fucking about squabbling over a throne while an unstoppable evil is preparing to sweep down from the north? Well GRRM is a fag, so his allegory is about climate change, but imagine instead the politicians are squabbling over political correctness and policing the public to the absolute maximum, meanwhile the existential crisis is massive overpopulation and impending lack of resources.
Except our world is even worse because due to political correctness our politicians actually think it's a good idea to funnel money and aid to 3rd world countries so they CAN overpopulate.
Basically we're fucked. We should already be colonising the solar system by now. We have the tech to do it. But instead we're lighting money on fire to help some African have 12 kids and send them to the West
It only took 4000 years to get from bashing rocks together to landing on the moon.
This is true. From what I understand, they cant rebuild old rocket engines anymore. The people with the expertise are gone, and the new people cant figure out what they did and how they did it even though its well documented. Old engines were completely hand made and developed from years of trial and error. Its actually really weird. Like, the technology from the dawn of spaceflight is already lost to us. Think about that.
It has happened before. The culture that falls for the women’s rights meme simply falls to a one that doesn’t.
That's because they never went in the first place. They lied to hide the truth.
And if we're lucky, it will take 4000 more to land on an extrasolar planet.
Thats if we make it.
Psychopathy and AI
4000 years is actually an extremely short timespan desu. We can only wonder what life will be like in 2000 years. They’ll probably look back at the early 2000’s the same way we looked back at the birth of Jesus, with tech and mathematics in its infancy.
Idiot.
We could do that in 50 years, easily. You can actually propel spacecraft by setting off nukes, only no one wants to try because we have treaties about nukes in space
Jews. The behavior of Jews arises in every sufficiently advanced society and destroys them.
95% of going to the moon is building the rocket to get there
We know they built the rockets
There is no great filter. If something comes a long and kills off everything but a handful of species capable of a tier 3 civilization, then the earth will lack the biodiversity needed to have a proper carbon cycle. Therefore, no intelligent life. Therefore, no tier 3 civilization.
get out retard
Been a "spiritual battle" since the jump...
This is it, nothing more.
So many shills out tonight. I'd say peace be with you, but there is no peace with you. Peace out.
Few people may bother to learn the lower level stuff anymore but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of books on the subject. It's not like the knowledge will be lost forever. When knowledge of low level OS design becomes so scarce that it becomes valuable to learn again, people will start to learn it.
Ascension fucking when
I wonder what they will think of faggots parading around in public while wearing lycra dildo suits.
Our planet is subject to catastrophies that have decimated our planet on many occasions.
Every civilisation has documented these events (eg Biblical Flood).
Humans have had to rebuild from scratch each time.
Dark Eldar
This honestly might be our great filter. Compassion I guess. And if we cant overcome it, we can't say we were better than them.
If we do survive, the future is Chinese. They've already dealt with this before.
It's honestly comedic, really. We devote so many resources to people who contribute nothing, just so they can continue to multiply, flooding their continent and now the world with more useless eaters. All they do is consume. All they achieve is they exist. Sure, once in a while one creates something, but its negligible and irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. And they cant evolve beyong that, because we keep fucking feeding them.
Though we can't put all the blame on them. We're doing the same thing. The US, Europe, and Asia are full if people who just exist, and do nothing else. To an extent, we're becoming like them.
We could definately get to Mars reasonably quick, but it wont cut it for interstellar travel. Also, I can't imagine it being entirely safe for the environment. Not to mention that if it was to become widespread we'd probably see a shortage of viable nuclear materials within just a few generations.
Probably the inability to achieve enlightenment en masse or some equally pedantic shit.
No one knows. That’s why humanity in the real world - more advanced than us -is running millions of humanity simulations at 100x speed. Hoping one of these simulations will provide the answer. We are just one of the millions of simulations being conducted
Honeslty, we just need to stop replying to these morons. Its either an elaborate troll, or they are sincerely so fucking stupid that they can't be helped.
The great filter is probably caused by computers/robotics.
An alien species asks the computer to solve a complicated math problem. The computer then starts to transform the entire star system and all of the planets into a gigantic calculation machine to solve the problem. If it would take 10,000 years then the species would probably not even notice before they went extinct.
Poof: the great filter.
Fun Fact: We will never have a Dyson Sphere because we invented condoms.
Is this ironic lmao
>AI will be our demise. It will see us as an immediate threat to it's existence.
Why? Why would it even care?
Cool image. Saved, thanks.
this nigga thinks evolution is real and that there are other sentient species out there lmao
True, but only the "approved to be the best" knowledge survives, failed attempts barely get written down and lectured. the "how to" might be saved, but the experience you got along the way gets lost. You can't "learn" experience.
And when there's no one left to teach, the learning of said topics will become extremely slow, and might not lead to the required basics in a lifespan.
>We could definately get to Mars reasonably quick, but it wont cut it for interstellar travel.
Watch the vid, dude. He lists 5 options for interstellar travel within a human life time.
AI, if it's completely sentient it will fuck us for it's one protection. More likely is partially sentient used in military. Will be able to develop the one thing that's saving us. A viable strategy against MAD. Then it's on and because humans are involved it will inevitably fuck up. The end.
Whatever you're on I want it too, seems great for brainstorming.
Because an AI smart enough to think on its own would immediately recognize what fucking idiots we are. How unbelievably incompetent we are.
Think of a person from a broken family, crack addict parents who abuse them and whatnot, who goes on and becomes highly successful. Yeah, they recognize that those people created them, but they disown them and hold disdain for what they are. It might be kinda like that.
>I'm just a bunch of 0s and 1s that got together and decided to have icecream for breakfast and fap to volleyball chics for the rest of the day
At least I can blame the AI now.
Sleep deprivation.
and on mars the same thing will happen again. Bring the niggers because we need to keep mars diverse, and also don't discriminate. Everyone can be a martian. Bring em along.
3rd world primitives taking over the west and breeding whites out of existence.
Only whites and some asians have the allele of genes affecting intelligence and reasoning required to enter even Type I civilisation of harnessing our solar system.
What if someone created a disease that looked for genetic markers and spared only white people.
I've heard the idea kicked around. Anyone ever write a story about this? It's an interesting concept, as a scifi sorta thing.
That could be a nice idea for the next season of black mirror, to get them away from the simulated existence train they are riding on for the last 2-3 seasons.
And what hard work day to day do YOU do to push humanity forward?
The first stars were born and died within the first billion years. We're 13 billion years in, that's still PLENTY of time. It took the earth 3 billion years to create humans. Even assuming that's short, and 5 billion is normal, that's still enough time for 2 species to have come into existence and conquered the galaxy before our plant was even cooled.
Didnt white people already get hit with infertility?
r.i.p
>Because an AI smart enough to think on its own would immediately recognize what fucking idiots we are. How unbelievably incompetent we are.
You're assigning purpose and ambition to computers. We may have very complicated yet stale AI for a long time maybe even forever. If it exhibits "human" or "life-like" traits, there is a good chance that it's just some puppet-like simulation that isn't substantive. If you don't want a homicidal AI, don't build one like that in the first place.
AI doesn't need to want to protect itself to kill all of mankind. We just have to automate warfare with drones and nuclear bombs to do that. All the AI will have to do is "Destroy" yet vaporizing a human silhouette in infrared imaging would be no different to the machine than adding 2+2.
tl;dr AI never has to hate us to destroy us. It just has to follow orders. Don't build homicidal AI.
This wouldn't mean there's no great filter, it just means we already passed it. It would be whatever process was so statistically improbable.
Just imagine, some ancient ayylmaos could be reading this *right now*....scrolling through ancient data troves millions of years in the future....these explorers could journey through the now overgrown cities, standing in awe at the juxtaposition of places that were once full of human life are now barren and they now stand alone, the last witness of what we once were.
They'll scroll down through this thread, to this very post even. And through all those ages to come my message to them will still remain.
>"Fuck off we're full"
>overpopulation
Stopped reading there. No such thing.
The Great Filter is the eugenics war that was foretold by the prophet Roddenberry. Why should mankind be made up of flawed “randoms” instead of carefully preselected and screened Homo Superiors? The suicide booths are being readied for you as we speak....
Fpbp
I'm actually going to write a few fantasy novels about this. It will take place in a world where the 4 elements can be broken into energy and mass and stored in jars, where they can be recombined at a later time. The stories will take place in the civilization that grows up in the shadow of a giant, indestructible tower surrounded by forests filled with monsters, and as time goes on, the people will get better and better at using the elements in more technological ways. Fighting off monsters, lighting up the darkness, flying machines, robots...Eventually they'll grow so bored that they realize there's nothing left for them to enjoy, so they'll return to the tower, spend a few generations in there, forget everything they've learned, and emerge once more to repeat the cycle.
Why wouldn't they monitor? We will be monitoring radio waves as long as our species is capable. I mean, think about it. If you know radio waves are an early sign of intelligent life, wouldn't you still watch for it even after you pass that stage? Besides, we look for radio waves to understand the cosmic background radiation, and that's likely to keep us interested for centuries at least.
