this. Previously the area was a center of Gaelic culture. English and low land Scots were tasked with displacing locals (Plantation), wiping out their culture, kicking them off the land etc. They mixed this up with racial and sectarian hatred and it became the center of their 'civilization'. Locals became a slave class.
In modern times the area is entirely dependent on UK for gibs, something like 80%+ of economic activity derives from government spending. Ironically the descendants of these planter people see themselves as some kind of 'lost tribe of Israel', whine the most about EU immigration and imagine their (far more economically successful) counterparts on the rest of the island are lazy and workshy.
