it isn't an academic source. it printed figures supplied by the American jewish committee. It printed in 1940-48 the same numbers, and said that they were the 1939 data because they had no new data because of the war.

but if you look at the world almanac figures that are in the 1939 data/1948 book, (pic related) you can count up easily that there were more than 2.8 million in the german occupied territories. there were 3 million in Poland alone.
