This system was necessary to maintain order in a multi racial society like India. But it was bound to fail over time and has contributed to the present state of India. The only way to ensure lasting stability would be to permanently eliminate the lower castes.

4 repeat variant - the original horticulturalists, hunters and gatherers. Very widespread, occurs across the globe.
7 repeats variant - raiders and nomads. Eat what you can, steal what you can, piss on what you cannot take. Take care for yourself, your horse, heard if you have any and your close family. Be self reliant, who needs help and need others to survive is weak, help each other against other people, but needing help is insulting. Poor ability in most things except outwitting others.
2r - civilized people. Highly cooperative, does not mind specializing, relying on others nor being relied upon. Avoids conflicts and values long term relationships. Innate aptitude for science and technology. Prefers to have as many friend as possible and relies on them to get things done.
7r and 2r are incompatible and see each other as evil, 2r 7r for their agression and unwillingness to cooperate, 7r2r see their cooperation as unfair and corrupt, and may mistakenly believe they are forced to cooperate by an outside force.
4/7 hybrids are common and alike the 7r, only less violent. 2r results in assortative mating, so their hybrids are rare.
Civilizations can work with DRD4 2R gene as the ruling class, with the possibility of 4R serving as lower castes.

Once the civilization gets polluted by the 7R (possibly some rarer also) variant, it collapses, since 7R's morality is the antithesis of the civilized morality - arrive, consume what you can, move again. Take care for yourself, cooperate against others. Those who want to cooperate for mutual benefits are stupid or weak. Nobody tells you what to do, you do what chose to do, others step out of your way. (others will help you destroy those who don't) If there is a strong order somewhere, you must uproot it so that the people can be easily raided.
All of this is of course completely incompatible with civilization, which requires long term planning of resource consumption, close cooperetion and relying on each other to allow specialization.
West is of course doomed for this reason, capitalism, democracy (with its political kayfabe to satisfy the nomad's need to only cooperate against the other side) and the culture of "social dances" and subtle hinting to make everyone independently decide to do what is needed to do is the last ditch attempt to save it and is a massive waste of time and resources.
In India, it seems likely the problem was solved by making the kshatriya caste for the carriers of the 7r gene, while 2R carriers were brahmins, the vayshyas might have been the 4r variants and the shudras for the weird ones. Or maybe there was an extra one variant that was either the vayshyas or shudras, or possibly 2R/2R brahmins, 7R/7R khatriyas 7R/4R vayshyas, 4R/4R shudras. Or the distinction was not exactly clear cut, since there was no gene testing.

This is less true than you may think, the Indian caste system has not been properly in place for over a century now, not since the Vedic peroid. There are remnants of what people think it was or that it should be. But most lower caste individuals change their surname now to avoid identification which has muddied the entire thing
