It's nothing new in German media. Our gastarbeiter community there is in a similar situation. Whenever media reports on some crime if the perpetrator is Croatian or Muslim from around here they will describe him as "Ex-Yugoslav", but if he is a Serb or any national minority from Serb populated regions (including Kosovo Albanians, even today) he will always be described as "a Serb". So when between 2014 and 2016 200k Albanians left Kosovo (recognized by Germany as an independent state) for Germany, you could see those 200k added to the numbers from mainland Serbia.
