It's case by case. There was nothing funny about that cartoon. It wasn't even "political commentary." It was in EXTREME poor taste, and angered many subscribers. Dead kid jokes don't go over well with the general population.

I used to be a freelance writer for several different publications before the market dried up. I dabble here and there still, but piecing together a full-time living doing that is not the easiest thing in the world to do, even if you know where to look. You can bet your ass I did not, and do not, maintain social media with my name on it where I broadcast my political opinions. You just can't do that anymore. A lot publications rely more on conservative or politically neutral readers paying the bills than many might think.
