A knife is a lethal weapon. It would be idiotic to meet a lethal weapon with non lethal force. This situation was already risky enough. The guy was unarmed and bleeding out, and at that split second the cop seemed to make a decision to try and restrain him instead of finishing him off. It was obviously a very bad decision in hindsight, but I wouldn't judge the cop unless you've personally been in a similar situation yourself.

This is why police cars should have net guns in the trunk. They should be used by default when the police answers a report of a person wandering outside with a knife. It's clear that 99% of the time the suspect is clinically insane, often as a temporary effect of drugs, if the person was consciously trying to commit harm they could do it a hundred ways more efficient. These cops could have stopped the mad man but didn't have the right equipment. Of course I would always insist the safety of the cops come as a priority. The first cop on the scene should point his gun at the suspect the whole time, and if another cop is involved he can attempt a non-lethal approach with the proper equipment.
