You can study e.g. engineering or law everywhere and just speak English. You can retire everywhere without speaking the local language. You can marry anyone in the EU without language problems for your kids. And companies will have no more problems with translation costs or internal communication if they work across the EU. Not to mention, no more labelling costs for 23 different languages, you just stick a single English label on it and sell your stuff in the whole EU.

As much as it pains the French, the lingua franca in the world isn't French, it's English, thanks to the dominance of the US in every field. And a common language really would make things simpler, faster, cheaper and more efficient. So that's a point in favor of a unified language. Hokkien is still a major language in Singapore that people use in their day to day lives, as well as Cantonese in Hong Kong, but English is one of the official languages and everyone already speaks it anyway. It doesn't mean the languages will die out, it just means accepting the reality that English is now the language of the world and will make things much more efficient. Gaelic being an official language of Ireland is an example of the wrong direction, a meme language that the government forces everything to be translated to alongside English even though it's pretty much useless, which will be the direction other European languages will go in the future. If someone wants to speak Gaelic with your friends and family or listen to Gaelic, they're free to do so, but to demand everything officially be done only in Gaelic even though everyone speaks English is pointless and obnoxious. And what will you do about the democratic system, anyway? Currently smaller countries have a disproportionately large influence in the parliament (well, as large as it can be with politicians looking out for their own interests) compared to more populated ones. If you remove the borders (and the ability to differentiate between countries), it would lead to some former cultural cycles (the larger ones) having vastly and asbolutely more voting power than others.

Why just Europe? If it's so important, there should just be one global nation, where race, culture, religion, or any type of distinction is erased for the sake of economic efficiency.
