In 2018, the German state paid around 536 million euros in child allowance for children abroad: 200 million more than in 2015 (+60 percent). This reports the "Bild-Zeitung" (Friday edition), citing figures of the Federal Ministry of Finance. According to the study, a total of child benefit was paid for 291,000 children living abroad.
Among them are more than 30,000 children with a German passport. In some cases, according to the Ministry of Finance, families in Romania would have received German child allowances of more than 2,000 euros per month for more than eight children, the newspaper continues.
The background to this is that according to EU law, foreigners who work in Germany and pay social security contributions or taxes are entitled to German child benefit (204 euros per month per child) - even if the offspring in the home country live at significantly lower living costs.
