Trade work is virtually guaranteed if you live in a state that doesn't stifle its own industry, so 33K is no problem to pay off in a year or two after starting real work. Fast food is not real work. I worked in several of them as a teen, and managed one as a young adult. The management in those places don't even really deserve $15 an hour.

Many illegal mexicans won't work for less than about 20-25/hr (remember that that is untaxed cash wages unlike what most people get)

Where i'm from you can get a job as an apprentice electrician or welder where they will not only pay you to work, but pay for your education, and once you are trained you make a *minimum* of $25/hr. Hardly a bad deal, even if you have money for college it is easily a better route than dumping money into a degree and reducing your available time for work. As an electrician or welder, once you are trained you can always continue education and get into specialized areas where you'll be making several hundred an hour, or you can start your own business and potentially bring in thousands an hour.

If they don't, then the employer is required to make up the difference. i.e. if the tips they earn in a pay period only average out to $3/hr, then the employer actually has to pay them $4.25/hr to get them up to the federal minimum for non-tipped employees.

I doubt most servers are even aware of this, because even on the shittiest of nights, most of them still earn more than enough in tips to get them above the regular minimum wage.

Almost nobody. Even entry level retail jobs usually start a dollar or so higher. In my area, department stores and grocery stores start their part-timers at around $9. The only businesses that actually pay minimum wage are small, independent ones that don't make a lot of money. And small, independently owned businesses are going to take the brunt of the harm from any minimum wage hikes.
