A lot of backbackers are idiots. First they go to Asia without clear plans when to come back. I'll travel around for like 3 or 5 months or something. Then they party and go too expensive places for indeterminate time. Then they realize that they don't have enough money for return flight tickets. Pretty likely next step asking money for that from friends and family. Then spend that money traveling around bit more. Again out of money. At this point friends and family tell 'em to fuck off, because they already gave 'em money for ticket home.

Source: I did that shit for couple summers and fall in my 20's. Some of my friends did it even more, one of them overstayed his initial plans by couple months. He didn't have to beg money from anyone, but fucker didn't stay at touch at anyone home for almost entire time.

My educated guess is that shit is far more expensive there than in places like Vietnam or China. Easier to run out of money without proper plans there. Places like Hong Kong and Singapore are already known to be expensive as fuck by virtually everyone.
