My grandfather came in with paperwork, waited, took the citizenship test, passed, became citizen. Along with the paperwork they gave him an 8.5x11 print of George Washington with the text of the pledge of allegiance. He hung it on the wall, stayed there until he died. Now I have it.

During WW2, the only immigration law we had excluded Asians. It was passed in 1924. Our current laws didn't exist until 1965.
So, yeah.. you're right. They didn't fight for that to happen in America... but if people WERE coming in illegally, they would've done something about it (see: internment camps during WW2).
