Flight school is fairly expensive, especially for someone who handles luggage for a living.
For big birds, it’s almost impossible to become a commercial pilot without military experience, and the air force would reject him outright at his age because they have their pick of the litter (my grandfather was rejected for having flat feet, apprentlymthat didn’t stop him from flying planes though)
The dude was poor and at the end of his rope. He saw an opportunity and he took it. He probably died happier than you will ever live

Most pilots hired by the airlines are now from civilian channels.
You can get loans.
The pay, now, is more than ample now to pay it back even at regional carriers.
He obviously had the raw skill. What he lacked was the discipline and motivation to do the hard work to achieve his goal properly.
