Your place of residence is temporary, your bonds are temporary and ever changing. You never settle, there is no higher goal, there is nothing bigger than your own goals. Imagine being part of a village, where you cooperate with others to build it, improve it, and maintain it. That would create a common goal for everyone involved, you would build something that you would care about, you would directly see and enjoy the fruits of your work. Same would happen with the rest of the people, and you would feel a sense of purpose, of belonging, of unity, you would feel a part of something bigger than you, a worthy project. You would take care of the village and so would the others because it was by your sweat and effort that it became what it is today. But nowadays people don't give a shit about anything but themselves, and it's no surprise. I don't know what the solution is but no shit people seek refuge in identity politics, we as humans crave that feeling of belonging and and right now it's nowhere to be found.

I live in a small village with less then 5000 thousand people, its not dead. Neither are any of the villages in the close area with similar population. We are doing fine, there is lots of volunteer work that happens everywhere, our small communities are often dependent upon it. People are nice and cooperate and contribute where they can. And there are millions of villages like this, in fact i'd vager that even the majority of villages are like this. You are talking about everyday life for small towns as if it where some place that exists only in your dreams while its literally the norm. The problem is most likely with you.
