You are a perfect example of the average citizen, user. I don't think you are stupid, but I think you have not given the matter of incarceration much thought, since you don't understand how it works for profit.
Let's take me as an example. I walk out my front door today and am immediately arrested. Let's assume I'm guilty of whatever I'm accused of, although these days, that's not necessarily a valid assumption.
But in this case, I'm taken to jail. I've got about $100,000 in savings (I don't, except in this scenario). First things first, I need to bail myself out of jail. So I call a bondsman. He posts my, let's say, $20,000 bond. I pay him $2,000 to do so. That's money that's out of my savings and right into the buy-and-sell economy.
Then I need a lawyer. I'll pay him $10,000 or so, and again, that's money out of my savings and right into the economy.
Ultimately I go to court. I'm found guilty and sentenced to 5 years and $50,000 in fines. There's $50,000 out of my savings directly into the pocket of the government. There are court costs. Let's say those are $5,000 or so. I'll pay that from my savings directly to the government.
So at this point, that's $67,000 directly out of my pocket and into the economy.
I go to prison. It costs, let's say, $50/day to incarcerate me. Over 5 years that will be about $90,000. Where does that money go? To construction companies and prison employees, who put it right back into the buy-sell economy.
Who pays that? That's reflected in increased taxes. What happens when taxes increase? People have to work more to get the things they want. Do people work less and accept less? Absolutely not, they will pay that $90,000 to keep me incarcerated 5 years by collectively working $90,000 harder, whether they realize it or not.
Anyway, yeah, locking people up is very, very, good for the economy. It's taking everything one guy has and distributing it to everyone else.

I don't need a source. There is no country, anywhere, in history, that has successfully legislated morality. Prohibition simply doesn't work, because there are other people with just as great a will to power as Duterte who want to make money selling drugs, and they are selling them, in the Philippines, right now - just like the mob sold Americans liquor during liquor prohibition and just like the cartels are selling drugs to Americans today.
Philippines are not some special place, I've been there twice. And I can pretty much guarantee you that whatever "anti-drug task force" Duterte is fielding, it does not even come close to competing with the DEA, FBI, local, and state police American drug dealers get over on each and every day.
