Why is NIMBY so rampant in the U.K.? The bellyaching over everything from Crossrail to new runway at Heathrow to High Speed 2 is just mind-boggling.
Also, why don't they just build another runway at Gatwick or Stansted and build faster metro rail to connect it to the City? It'd be faster and cheaper than trying to fight Heathrow NIMBYs for another 20 years.

Heathrow - I completely agree. They should have gone with the Boris Island plan but British Airways is highly invested in the area and there are a load of companies around there as well dependent on the airport. It isn't really the Nimby's in that area as well. Most of the complaints are from Twickenham and Richmond as they don't want more airplane noise.
Crossrail - It's a pretty successful project so far. It was fascinating to watch them work on it. The issue is that Central London is just layers upon layers of overlapping history, pipes and various shit that the Victorians built but didn't map out. So, the outer London sections have been finished for ages but they kept finding things in Zone 1 which took time to excavate.
