I default to 20% tip just because I’m lazy and the math is easy. If the server ignores my drink being empty, or doesn’t check in to see if I want anything else, it drops to 15%.
If the server is bad I drop it to 10%. It’s easy money to be a server, I did it when I was in high school. If you work at a good restaurant or bar you’re pulling in $400 over a weekend tax free.

I’d rather tip the chef who made my food and the dishwasher who was nice enough to wash the plate I ate in than some college bimbo who neither cooked my food nor washed by dirty plates but merely picked my plate up and brought it to my table. I tip baseline 15% you lose 5% for being spotty if the joint is empty or for a bad attitude, but you can gain 5 or 10% depending on how positive you come off and how easy you make the experience. If I'm at a new restraunt and the aerver goes out of their way to help me figure out what I want to drink or what I want to eat depending on my taste, I'd say that warrants more of a tip.

Waiter here, I have a college degree and make more working as a waiter than I did in my industry and I only work half the hours. If you don't like tipping, make your own food and don't support the culture. Going out to eat and blowing hundreds of dollars for other people to feed you and wait on you is your choice.
