Math is really important because it allows us to have a high level of abstract thinking. I always think back to a Calvin & Hobbes cartoon. Calvin, who hates maths, says he no longer believes in it. He can't see it or feel it, therefore it's not real and he can ignore it.

I think that as silly as that sounds, it really sums up why certain people struggle with the subject, abstract concepts are just harder for some people.

Welder here. Trigonometry is useful for calculating dimensions if the engineer was lazy. The tricky part is when you're stuck without a scientific calculator or Internet access, and need to reconstruct a trigonometric function from its Taylor series.

I somewhat agree with you that there should be an option to homeschool your kids, but they should take a standardized exam each year then. Homeschooling is legal in my country as far as I know. The textbooks might give one example per concept but the teachers skip over that part because they have to teach the whole curriculum in 9 months and don't have time to dwell on the why.
