Basically, Common Core is garbage, and the way most Millennials were taught math was also pretty much just abstract alpha-numeric gibberish which had no real-world applications.

Get kids interested in electricity, astronomy, physics, metallurgy, etc. Don't just shit a bunch of letters and numbers on to ten thousand pages of textbook and expect kids to take it to heart.

Math is really important because it allows us to have a high level of abstract thinking. I always think back to a Calvin & Hobbes cartoon. Calvin, who hates maths, says he no longer believes in it. He can't see it or feel it, therefore it's not real and he can ignore it.

I think that as silly as that sounds, it really sums up why certain people struggle with the subject, abstract concepts are just harder for some people.

You're wondering how many hours you have to work at McDonalds until you can afford to pay your mom rent this month. You pay 100 dollars a month, you're paid 5 dollars after taxes at your McJob, and you have 20 saved up.

y = ax + b,

y = the 100 dollars

a = 5 dollars/hr

x = hours you need to work

b = 20 dollars you have saved up

Rearrange the formula to express x. Show your work. Don't forget to sign your name at the top of the page, if you can even spell your own name that is.

4 days ago

Nolan Gray

We all agree that schools are made to indoctrinate children into socialist beliefs. But how does math fit into the picture?

It doesn't, which is why American schools suck shit at teaching math. It's never applied math, they never explain the theory behind why formulas exist. They never explain how they can be used. The only make you memorize formulas long enough to pass a test. Most burgers barely retain any of that shit and have no desire to pursue it as a result. I hated math class in high school and college. I do enjoy applied math and having people explain applied math in my various hobbies and interests like architecture and physics though, but it was only outside of school that I gained my own appreciation for it. Most 20 somethings can't balance their budget, and they sure don't understand the basics of investing and economics, and that's because school fucked them on math as kids, so kike financial bankers can fuck them as adults.

math beyond algebra isn't particularly useful for work

for example, most people that aren't practice in math couldn't even replace any variable in v=ar with p=va to figure out any combination of basic electrical systems

Higher levels of math prove that our conventional systems of logic collapse at higher dimensions

previous idea completely wrecks popular statement of "could god create a rock so heavy he can't lift it" arguments

It's because math is the epitome of critical thinking. It's natural barriers immediately keep normies from it and anybody that's birthed to be seperate from normies is dissuaded from becoming enlightened through poor education.

Here is the proof for a geometric series:

define our series

s = 1 + 1/a + 1/a^2 + 1/a^3 ...... + 1/a^n

multiply entire series by "a"

s*(1/a) = 1/a + 1/a^2 + 1/a^3 + 1/a^4 ..... + 1/a^n + 1/a^(n+1)

subtract a*s from s, most of the terms cancel out

s - s/a = 1 - 1/a^(n+1)

solve for s

s = (1 - 1/a^(n+1)) / (1 - 1/a)

if n goes to infinity, 1/a^(n+1) goes to zero, therefore:

s = 1/(1 - 1/a)

So if a = 10, we know our answer will be 10/9

In that particular example we started with the term 1/a instead of 1, so we can divide by "a" to get: 1/9. Then we have to multiply by 9 since that is in the numerator of all of them, so our final answer is 1.

And the second problem is very difficult, you need to know complex analysis.

4 days ago

This is actually quite a difficult problem, you will use contour integration.

I don't know how much mathematics you know, but I will do a quick rundown:

pic related, you can turn a volume integral into a surface integral across the surface bordering the volume (given certain conditions)

you can turn a surface integral into a line integral around the border of the surface (given certain conditions)

in a similar way, you can turn an integral across the complex plane into a line integral around a boundary of that surface

it turns out this integral always evaluates to 0 unless a certain condition is met

thus for a typical function only certain points in particular will be nonzero, these are the residue points

by finding all the residues, you can know the value of any line integral circling around, regardless of path

thus we can use this fact to help evaluate our integral, do a line integral along the x axis to infinity both directions, then around in a large radius at infinity (where the integral evaluates to zero, so it can be ignored)

thus knowing the residues contained within our contour, we know the value of this integral

4 days ago

Nolan Sanchez

let sqrt2=x

if x is rational then there exists a' and b' members of Z, b not equal to 0 such that:

x=a'/b'

let a/b/ be a'/b' written in it's lowest form (i.e. the only common factor of a and b is 1)

so

x=a/b

hence

2=a^2/b^2

Hence a^2 is even

If a were odd then a^2 would be odd, so a must be even, so a^2 must be able to be written as 4c for some c in Z

2=4c/b^2

1=2c/b^2

b^2=2x

Hence b^2 must be even, and by similar argument we determine that b must be even. Which means a and b share 2 as a common factor, a contradiction.

y(x)

saying x is right, but you also need to say what the dimensions of x are and what it exactly is (which you don't understand because well, you have 0 clue about math)

the gradient is NOT the slope. The slope can be calculated by taking the derivative

the gradient itself is a differential operator , M is NOT the gradient

it's not wrong

yes it is.

a vector is a list of values

no, a vector is an element of A VECTOR SPACE

that's all. this is absolute basics , like, something you learn in the first semester of any mathematics course at an university

spouting equations without specifiyng what and where you are working with/on just shows you are a brainlet

a real number is just a value

a real number is a scalar , you can not use the same operations for scalars as with vectors

if you had a brain you would understand why its important to specify what is what now, because you can't do everythign with both of the objects

Thank you.

Listen, we all agree that in a strict mathematical discourse those are just random letters and signs until you don't clearly define and specify what they represent.

But, anybody who have actually took a basic math class in secondary school knows that those particular letters are commonly used to teach linear equations. So, being us a bit less autistic than you, we can overcome the imprecision and grasp what OP pic wants to say.

If you, in your right mind, thinks that the thot in OP l's pic was speculating on the importance of operative definitions while writing her bullshit comment, you are the most retarded math savy guy I've ever met online.

4 days ago

Robert Peterson

A constant is an element of a field (also known as scalar) that can be varied.

No nigger. A constant is by definition a fixed fucking value. Whenever you have an equation of the form y = ax+b, a and b are fixed, they don't fucking change, the only thing that changes is X, the independent variable, and Y, the dependent variable. Real valued scalar is just a number that is real. You can have both real valued constants, complex constants and imaginary constants. The numbers being real or imaginary is not what makes it a variable or not. It's whether they change or not. And in any equation in the form of y=ax+b, a and b never change for a specific equation.

You're retarded, not because you're wrong but because you refuse to accept you're wrong.

A VECTOR SPACE

What are dimensions and why must your vector space have them?

Of course you can use the same operations with scalars as with vectors. Just use one-dimensional vectors, brainlet.

I love these Jewish math threads. Classic hasbarah done by people with a binder of talking points.

4 days ago

Carson Rodriguez

That's wrong. A constant can be varied and treated like a variable. Actually in most real life cases , that's what is done.

The main point is , that it's important to specify what is what exactly, because otherwise it's not only meaningless, it's actually wrong and confusing.

we agree

no, we don't. if you write equations without specifying what is what, you are a moron and you are wrong.

other than that, just writing y=ax+b doesn't mean a,b, are fixed , unless you SAY THAT

you are either engineers or brainlets (or both)

4 days ago

Kayden Parker

A constant can be varied and treated like a variable.

If you can variate it then by fucking definition it is no longer a constant but a fucking variable.I guess every textbook and teacher in the entire world is wrong and you're right. Go learn some math on mathisfun or some other kid's website.

Do you understand that euclidean geometry is restricted to 2 dimensions and that the real life is in 3 dimensions?

Of course. You do understand that if I need to build/manipulate something I can approximate to a plan I will use euclidean geometry?

Like when I need to know the area of a portion of my garden?

Believe me, I understand your point, but you are being too autistic rn.

a dimension of a vector space is given by the amount of linearly independent base vectors which produce the vector space

scalar and vectors are the same

Not what I said faggot. I'm saying that the operators used on the vector side collapse to the same ones used for scalars when the vectors are one-dimensional.

Multiplication in the one dimensional real-valued vector space is identical to multiplying scalar real numbers BECAUSE the real numbers are a one-dimensional vector space.

This is also linear algebra 1. Please kill yourself now.

4 days ago

Caleb Nelson

you are missunderstanding the meaning of "constant". it simply means that it's a scalar that can be varied but is fixed

in most real life usages in professional mathematics, it's useful to just treat constants like variables

especially in fields like perturbation theory

no. if you use a function, you are already not doing euclidean geometrry

functions do not exist in euclidean geometry, equations don't exist

if you say you use "classical geometry" what you are using is actually just riemannian geometry in 3 dimensions , but you think that you are using euclidean geometry because you think of theorem of pythagoras and what not

can be varied but is fixed

You don't seem to understand what a constant is. By its fucking definition, you cannot vary it. It is always stays fixed.

You take y = ax+b as an actual function where a,x,b are all varying and not as a template for other functions, where a,b are constants and y,x are variables. No amount of autistic screeching will change that

**en.wikipedia.org**

it simply means that it's a scalar that can be varied but is fixed

If it's fixed then it cannot be varied

In mathematics, the adjective constant means non-varying.

y = ax+b is a linear function with a,b being constant.

you're thinking that just because you can make different version of y=ax+b by changing a and b, it suddently means a and b are no longer constants. That is not true. If you do change a and b, you no longer have a function of a line, but a function that spews out all possible function of lines. In that case, it makes a and b variables, not constants.

In other words, either you have a constant, which is always fixed and does not change, or you have a variable, which can be changed.

Would you please calm down? Where have I wrote an equation?

You are sperging because we automatically connected the OP's pic with linear equations, because the girl expressed it in the same form the use to teach that in school.

girl is clearly referring to primary/secondary school math teaching

writes an equation in the exact same way every math teacher uses to teach linear equations to youngster

everybody who is not a turbo autists gets what she meant

turbo autists from CERN start lecturing everybody on the conventionality of notation

If I say something in an improper way (and implicitly admit my incompetence), and competent people guess what I'm referring to, it doesn't mean that those people ignore my mistakes. Those are just irrelevant for grasping what's going on. With your autism drifted away from the topic.

Do you actually think that geometry is useless for everyday life? Do you agree with OP's pic?

4 days ago

what is variation of the constant

what is introduction of a constant in perturbation theory

like holy shit stop posting if you have only a high school level of knowledge or you are an engishitter

Classical Geometry is largely irrelevant for real life, because geometry in the classical sense does not exist anymore. When you "do" geometry in real life, you are not really doing geometry, with a ruler and compass, you are doing analytic geometry (at the very best).

Even your calculator uses analytic approximations and your plotter as well. It's actually one of the main problems in computer graphics.
