I have to single moms working for me and my department right now and I'm thinking about firing them. All they ever do is make up stories about how they can't come to work and they try to attack all the other male employees by lying about them. Inside they gossip all the time. I haven't really caught them in anything yet but I know they're doing it. There's one guy that works for me that's actually really good but he's just not all that Suave about how to deal with women like this and they're actually making it impossible for him to do his job. Should I just fire the single moms and never hire one ever again?

Single moms aren't a protected class as such, but you are treading on thin ice here. If you are going to fire them, the reasons have to be neutral.

If you want to do it right, expect it to take some time. Better check your state laws too. Some states have extended federal family leave laws so that you cannot fire someone because they call in sick - you have to accommodate them.

Something else - if you nail them for a performance issue, they can prevail in a claim they had some mental condition that kept them from performing to the established standard, even if they never told you about it.

If you want to do this right and not blow up in your face, you better talk to a lawyer or consultant.

If you want to avoid hiring them, you need a plan for that. You need to establish that they are single mothers indirectly. Do not ask anything that would be remotely related to their marital status or whether they have children. If they say something about it in the interview, don't put it in your notes. You can ask them indirect questions like the job may require that they stay late on short notice - could she do that, that kind of stuff.

They tend to have tolerable personalities, comparatively even tempers and at least understand the concept of a workplace being a team environment where discretionary decisions that benefit them personally can adversely impact others. They also tend not to complain as much.

Again, these are tendencies, not absolutes, and I'm talking primarily about Asian women, and to some lesser extent Black women. White women are all over the map, and at best even the good ones are simply less neurotic than the rest, regardless of their personal situations.

It's time to start keeping a very well detailed record, even if its retroactive, about specific times they've kept calling out. Depending on your State's law, you can fire them for that unless they have some protection that requires them to be caught doing something truly rule or law breaking. This is to cover your ass for any law suits you may receive. Any text messages proving they're calling out (women do this where I work) should be saved and added to their file or any dossier you're building on them. More evidence is good, even if you dont end up needing it- I'd say fire the first one that you need gone so you have time to hire a replacement + look for a replacement for the 2nd woman. The 2nd one might realize she needs her job and start to perform it better

so like 7 or 8 years ago i was working for a company, and they decided to send one person from the shipping/receiving department (me) and one person from the office staff to a First Aid level 2 class, just so there were multiple people available from multiple departments or whatever.

Anyway it turns out the woman they sent was a single mom, in her mid 20s at the time. So long story short, I barely knew her going in beyond her name and a few brief conversations I'd had with her, but we hit it off pretty quick, ended up getting my dick sucked on the 2nd or 3rd day of the class, and then fucked her that weekend and this went on for a few months.

Anyway I quickly saw how shitty she was at her job, and how she used her "single mom" status as a tool to get out of work, like I had a 4x10 schedule, but she was on 5x8s, and she'd call the office, FROM MY HOUSE, on Friday's and say like "I can't come in I have to take care of my sick child" and then proceed to spend most of the day with me. It was crazy, and she did this repeatedly.

Eventually I broke it off because this woman was just way too clingey, she wanted me to raise her child which I had no interest in doing, and I told her so, which pissed her off, she pulled the whole "if you're not prepared to love my child we have no future" type shit, which was fine.

Then I see her pulling the same child-related excuses whenever anything goes wrong. She does a bad job? files something incorrectly, or doesn't finish work on schedule? she starts crying, "I was so stressed because of "

Source - I've worked with 99% women in the last decade. I wont get into all the office politics but I can tell you the women who are the very hard workers will find a way to get daycare for their kid, or have a stable family where they'll have babysitting coverage. Single mothers think they're untouchable because "I could stay home and collect, I want to be with my child anyway" and this nothing to lose attitude dictates a lot of their entitlement. More than one together in an environment where they are too similar people will only be disastrous for you when both suddenly decide their boyfriend or whatever makes too much money. Give them bad performance reviews, meet with them to discuss how they are going to improve their behavior, then when they inevitably keep doing the same shit, give another bad performance review and use that as justification to fire them. Be sure to keep a paper trail and document all the damage they are causing because they will try to sue your ass. Make sure you are well liked by your higher-ups so they will stand by and defend you with the corporate lawyer rather than putting you out to pasture.

Be careful and build a case. If you have an HR department, better get their input and guidance. Women know that they can make your life hell and possibly get some cash for making false/thin claims. That's a pretty crazy story, and I fully agree. I can tell this is real because it resembles many stories I've heard from friends sprinkled with a little self experience (except the talking shit part). Like you said, one negative person in a work space always has the potential to spread and decrease productivity across the board, create new rifts between employees who don't normally have problems, manipulation etc. I recently transferred from an entirely female office to a different branch because they continually attempted to cover their mistakes by blaming my department without having the intelligence to realize we keep very good records that tracks where the origin of problems start -shit you cant blame on us. They'd do this maybe once or twice a week all while pretending to be friendly to us.
