Actually, that brings up a good question. Can states just build walls around their borders? I know travel between states is supposed to be free but let's just say a state decides to build a wall. Travel is still permitted, you just have to go through a checkpoint.

Immigration is completely under the federal government's control. Otherwise the border states would have built walls on their own decades ago.
Like 20 years ago I was on a road trip with my mom and I can’t remember if we were entering or leaving California but there was a checkpoint and they stopped everybody to search for fruits and vegetables. It was weird but my point is that yes I think you can have check points. However, if you stopped someone at a checkpoint and denied them entry into a state you would have to have a constitutional reason to do so.

States can do anything they want in inside their borders for as long as the federal government or some other state do not object.
But, as I said at , in certain matters federal government have primacy and immigration and border control is one of those, as Arizona v. United States [1] decided:
