You know you could always build a fixed wing drone, with about a 18 foot wingspan, with solar cells on the wings and about 8 grands worth of lipo batteries.. then use a couple SBCs to control the power, and another SBC with GPS to plot a course, then add a camera, then modify a satellite phone to send you data + photos back, then fly to the southern tip of Australia (Tasmania) and launch the drone toward Antarctica, Antarctica is relatively flat, so you could, using cheap infrared and motion detectors, give it the ability to land fully autonomously, then allow it to land and recharge the batteries off the solar cells and you could even bring it back.
This would cost you a total of around 15k USD to actually do (that includes 3d printer + plastics, batteries and all electronics)

I think that's literally the opposite. The portion of a sphere that is invisible will change with your relative elevation. The edge of a plane will not. At some point youre looking at a low enough angle that the edge recedes. On a sphere the high you go the more sphere you can see. So the horizon moves with you. Until youre so high enough of the sphere is visible in the center of your vision that the curve is observable to your senses.

With an 18 foot wingspan, and 22%+ solar cells from solarcity, you can fly forever, it never needs to land, not even at night, because you switch to reserve power which is generated during the day. However you can't do this with a camera which is always on, because the camera uses too much juice.
