A lot of people are butthurt about Buddhism because Buddha was an aristocrat and they think he must be trying to trick them into being happy with their lot instead of trying to attain aristocracy for themselves. But what they don't see is that the aristocracy is like a prison, you have so much material wealth to protect, you can't unilaterally use power because of social structures, most of your life is caught up in petty politics and everybody around you is always scheming and you can never relax. I like the Smarta denomination of Hinduism as a potential foundation around which to build a future European religion. Where as the Smarta ritual emphasizes the oneness of five different aspects of the personal god, we could alter it to emphasize the oneness of the personal gods among five different Indo-European pantheons. This would allow for different peoples throughout Europen world to favor their own gods/traditions of their ancestors while fostering an understanding that they are all a part of a larger interrelated family of belief/tradition.
