We will always be at odds based on collective consciousness. Russian history is one of chronic insecurity, always trying to find security in isolation and only taking in parts of the West which they think will allow them to do so (think Peter the Great). They were enslaved by Central Asians and effectively bullied out of Europe, making them not wholly Western but not wholly Eastern. The US has always seen that security is built through building connections abroad- often Quixotically and at a detriment to its own citizens. We saw this Best when the Cold War was starting in how Russia entrenched itself behind buffer states and the US was trying to build economic interconnectedness under Breton Woods and military interconnectedness through NATO. We may never see the day when Russia and the US can build a lasting relationship built on trust.
