When Jesus tells John "Son, behold thy Mother" he is appointing her as mother of the Apostles and the Church.

Not everything is in scripture though. The Assumption of Mary was such a significant tradition in early Christianity not even Luther opposed it. The idea of Mary as an "ordinary woman" is entirely an innovation of modern feminism.
