Health insurance is the only insurance product in the US which is not subject to market competition. Add in the rules that no person inside a group policy may be charged more than any other person in the group, irrespective of personal health. Reimbursement rates are pathetically low. The hospital might see $10K out of insurance on that bill, plus my $100 ER copay. That's pushing it too.

The problem, as always, is government involvement in the market. Without exception, when you see any market product not subject to competition and with defacto monopolies, the price will skyrocket.

Exactly. Insurance pays 80% to 100%, depending on what services are covered at what percentage on the policy you took, the hospital will usually cut the remaining 20% down somewhat if you talk to the accts department,and whatever is left, you can pay $50 a mo for.
If you are a cash pay/no ins patient, they will drop the price right away, see if you qualify for Medicaid/Medicare, and either they will pick up the rest or you can make the minimum payment.
Same as it has been the last 40+ yrs.
It's a true trade-off, since we have the nicest hospitals, treatment facilities and access to the latest meds/surgeries and we're able to see doctors almost immediately & our hospitals aren't filled with non-English speaking ragheads.
