In Brazil the average uni pothead costs about 2k/month to the state (about 3 times as much as someone from a private uni) while doing nothing for up to 8 years but strikes (yeah, a student's strike). Despite the heavy investments on public universities our scientific production is extremely low because noone fucking cares, they aren't paying for anything.

I would be okay with free college if there were standards like only people scoring in the top 10% on an aptitude test and with a high school diploma can attend.

I got a Pell Grant for free that will all but cover an associate's at a community college, after that the tuition at an in state University is $4-6k a year
People pay out the ass for the "college experience" aka out of state tuition, meal plans, dorm housing, hundreds of dollars a week for alcohol, etc etc
No I won't get a job at Goldman Sachs with the rich kids but I will be able to live comfortably and pay it off

The US education system actually does a very good job at spotting intellectually gifted but poor children and sending them off to top universities with everything covered.
My parents made $30,000/year in NYC, but I went to a top 15 university on a full-ride with a 2380 SAT score.

For everyone else, you have to pay a lot more, but you're also not the 'cream-of-the-crop'.

Of course, there are blacks and Hispanics who don't deserve to get into a top university, and that's a weak point in our system, but for the most part, talented people in our country do have it easy.

Many states have chosen to integrate trades into their community college, or allow in state higher ed support to be spent there. Shop classes are relatively expensive on a per person basis because of all the heavy equipment you usually need, so they tend to be supply limited.

It's a bit unexpected to students when the auto shop classes have stricter requirements than the English or teacher training classes.

He still gets a shot at a degree. That's really how the system is designed. The ace students that can pass AP classes to skip units pay less. The borderline students pay more.
