The Russian Empire was not wealthy or technologically advanced, and participating in the War was a (fatal) mistake, but it was not remotely as terrible, looked at objectively, as either the Bolsheviks or sniggering Westerners often suggested.

Serfdom had already been abolished, and reform though slow was on the way. A reformed Russian Empire would have eventually become a semi-constitutional monarchy where the imperial household still have a lot of authority and power but most decision-making is reached by a combination of experts and elected officials.

Russia’s land and resources give the nation so much influence by default that even only partially reformed it would have been a formidable power.

On the international stage, a moderate Russia instead of a revolutionary Communist force would have taken the sails out of Nazi extremism. German revanchism might have risen anyway, but almost certainly with less fanaticism and with less severe consequences. No USSR also means no iron curtain, no communist China.

It’s a lot of hypotheticals but it’s quite likely that no USSR would have meant a much more gentle and gradual decolonization process. Instead of a sudden shattering during World War II, the British, French, Portuguese and Dutch Empires would have likely declined over centuries only gradually, and possibly without much violence or unpleasantness at all.
