I know a guy who was heavily religious that was also very dismayed with Christianity after his wife divorced him. I'm guessing it's because they thought that all their praying and praising would earn them good boy points from God and ensure that nothing bad happens to him, and then when something bad does happen, they turn their back to what they put all their faith in, God/Christianity.
