They both said "As long as you can get screamed at without reacting and you can run for a long time without stopping, you'll be fine." Wound up permanently injuring my knee in football in high school (I still have a slight limp six year later), so I couldn't do it.

That said, I think you'll enjoy it. If your IQ is above room temperature, you will rise through the ranks spectacularly quickly while your buddies are left dragging their knuckles.

Frankly. You'll be fine at 29. I saw a 30 something guy go through basic. Us young guys a thought he was "old" but looking back, he was younger than I am now.

Beyond this however, if you just want to learn basic discipline and how to fire weapons, stay fit, etc, then I highly recommend you join the national guard.
I'll get some shit from the marines in this thread, but the reality is that if you judt want to join and get out with some training (and be less likely to be asked to die for zog), then national guard is your best bet.
It's reserve duty, you report to your own home state and you are only likely to be called up to fight for zog if we actually go to war.
Sure, it's not as sexy or as "heroic" as serving in the combat arms as an active duty soldier, but if you're smart and can do well on the ASVAB, then you shouldn't be trying to be a front line soldier. The reality is that your intelligence can be better served to the military (and yourself) by getting into an MOS where you can learn actual skills.
The other reason for the national guard is that the Army allows you to pick your MOS and stick with it through your entire enlistment.
And here's the thing, if you find you truly love the service and want to go full time, you can always switch to active duty, you can always reenlist under a new MOS and/even go the route of being a commissioned officer.
You're older, so you probably feel like you have to do something "NOW", but you haven't even hit your thirties, and frankly, I liked my thirties better than I liked my twenties.

At the end of the day, it's up to you, but I highly suggest at least considering going national guard and picking a logistics/support MOS that will give you a good career (diesel/helicopter mechanic as an example). And again, you can always go full time or switch your MOS at a later date if you really want to.
