If you want to learn some, I very highly recommend the Michel Thomas audio tapes. They are very good for learning some basic conversational Russian very quickly. Much much faster than you would with a more traditional method like Duolingo.

I didn't think the process was that bad once I figured it out. The hardest part was finding correct information because several sites said different stuff. The process was 1) book a hotel 2) pay $23 to a third party for a tourist visa invite 3) fill out visa application online - kinda long 4) send the above, passport, and a photo to a 3rd party company that works with russian consulate 5) get it all back in the mail. Took about 15 days start to finish and cost me $375 all things considered.

They are making it easier, but not for Americans (easier for Euros and Asians) and not for like 3 years.

Anybody can look up franchises-per-city stats online to see that their concentration is Moscow is nowhere near American cities, Paris, or London. Besides the 4 you mentioned (and Dunkin Donuts), I saw a severe lack of American stores compared to most European cities.
