Sears was a staple of American culture. Read about the history, it's actually quite fascinating how the company grew so large. The problem with their decline is that they didn't adapt to the online marketplace, and Craftsman tools moved their R&D to China in 2003 and the products went to shit; not necessarily the fault of Sears, but they've always been known as the main Craftsman dealer. Also, Sears has been consistently losing money for over a decade, but the CEO/board of directors are too proud to just liquidate the company.
Kmart however, I don't care about. It's always been a low class store since they opened.

Sears and Kmart have both been decaying companies for the past couple of decades as they failed to innovate for different eras and merely survived based on their aging customer bases. Their stores have been cripplingly depressing to walk through for a long time: there's no energy or life in them. I'm actually kind of surprised there are that many of them still around, quite frankly. It's not exactly a bad thing for some businesses to fail. Capital gets redirected from failing companies to growing companies. Prize retail real-estate gets put to more efficient uses and that benefits all of society.

Best Buy in my city is packed to the walls on weekends, and does pretty well during school summer break. My city isn't very populated with n*groes, and the few who work at my BB have anime buttons, and ain't hood people. People who work there are at least professionally polite to me -- and I know they get a small % of commission.
Target, on the other hand, has 1/2 empty shelves, no in-store overhead music, clueless Starbuck's baristas, folks who are qualified to fold clothes, etc.

IIRC the Sears Tower was also the pet project of their main leader who retired or died before it was completed when the company was still on the up-swing. They over built and leased out extra space on the theory that they'd been expanding for 100yrs and planned to continue.

IMO there is LOTS of opportunity for "growth" in Smart Phones, mostly improving human interface and non-creepy "smart home (and car, etc) but Apple is clearly in a rut. I'm expecting good, non-creepy innovation to come from Turd World developers on Android. "How to feed the goat if tending your herd of wives" etc, or make your home's doors and lights work automatically.
