When you take human insulin (presumably what they're referring to as "cheap" insulin) as opposed to insulin analogs, it's going to do weird shit to your blood sugar.

The reason insulin analogs exist is to help minimize blood sugar swings. You can manage it with human insulin (what people did before analogs were invented) but you have to realize that it's completely different from an analog and essentially do the same type of experimentation you would do when you started on the analog.

And even he fucked up somehow, he likely had at least 15 minutes between when he knew his sugar was low and when he passed out. Plenty of time to stop yourself from dying.

It's complicated and I don't think anyone really knows. It's a whole number of things, including the fact that medicare and other government insurers (i.e. the NHS) don't pay nearly enough for the drug companies to recover their cost in a timely manner so private plans get to subsidize bums on Obamacare.

The other factor is R&D costs. Drug companies spend billions to bring a blockbuster drug to market in the US because of the FDA and the majority of drugs they test, fail. So they have to recover their cost and they have to do it in the 15 or so years they have the patent.

And if anyone tells you "muh insulin's been around since 1930" that's absolute bullshit. Science first figured out how to extract insulin from pigs in the 30's but that's a very far cry from what we have now. Modern insulin analogs were only invented this century I believe.
