Jow Forums complains a lot about pitbulls (and fair enough), but it kind of obscures a much larger trend in the west - cat ownership has risen sharply over the past couple decades. In the US, for example, the number of pet cats and pet dogs used to be roughly equal until the 1990's, when cats took the lead. Now, there are 30 million more pet cats than pet dogs. The same pattern has taken place in other nations.
Is there a socio-cultural reason for this? Is this an indicator of something? Is it correlated with other kinds of social or political behavior? Why are cats more abundant as pets today than in the recent past?
They're better in cities as a result of not having to take them outside down 10 stories all the time. Parents are now dogpilled and probably not getting dogs so their daughters won't fuck them.

Guess it's tied to home ownership. If I had a house with at least some open space I'd gladly get a dog. I believe a dog should be large enough to act as a proper guard dog and keeping one of those in an apartment is weird since there's fuckall of space for such an animal. Yes, I know, and it says on the previous certificate, but since it presents with unusual symptoms, doctors want to use differential diagnosis because somehow it gets stuck in their head that what I have it's due to whatever else. Nobody in a full time job has enough time to take care of a dog properly. Dogs are very high maintenance animals, they require being walked and played with several times per day and get upset if they are left alone for long periods. Cats are also better suited to apartment living because they don’t take up space, don’t need a garden to shit in and and they are more than content to just lay around all day.

Cats are 100x easier and cheaper than dogs. Dogs require more vet visits, most areas require registrations/licenses, they need people to walk and exercise them and most need yard space (not that everyone does this which is cruel, don't get a fucking dog if you're going to make it live like a housecat). An indoor cat rarely needs a vet visit, lives up to 20 years or more and litter is cheap.

I have friends with dogs, and although they are excellent companionship they do need constant attention. Cats demand it just a few times a day and they're happy. Also, self-cleaning, self-exercising, automatically house-trained. Cheaper to feed. Live longer than dogs. Cons - they have a secret life of their own and every time your furry friend goes off on the call of the Wild, or just to shit in a neighbour's garden, you never know for sure if they're ever coming back. They have unconsciously evolved to take advantage of our human baby response, domestic cats mewing in the same tones and human infants, their faces and eyes larger and rounder than their wild ancestors, hence cat-ladies. If you want a relationship with a cat then you have to be its mother, because that's the only relationship cats have evolved to understand.
