yup segregation and authoritarian moderation behavior is the only reason Reddit has continued to be successful.

Subs just become circlejerks where ths is the dominant, agreed-upon position, and anything that challenges that opinion is considered wrong and unwanted.

Sorta like if there was 2 competing video games in the same genre (say First Person Shooter) and people kept going into one sub, and saying the game sucked and that the competing game was just better. Obviously that would be an unwanted intrusion into that subs space, because anyone spending time in that sub is doing so because they prefer/enjoy that particular game.

It becomes more problematic when you start getting into more serious issues like politics or world events or psychology and you find the same sort of dogmatic obedience to the agreed-upon belief structure within those subs.

Reddit is fine to waste time on, but it's not a website that can be taken seriously in the real world. I'm glad that news media seems to realize this and avoids referencing or citing Reddit, as the opinions there are not representative of the general public.

That's actually the primary reason I see sites like 4ch being so successful; the anonymity allows people to be brutally honest without worrying about upvotes/downvotes or having any "post history" follow them around, associated to their identity. You get a lot more truth on sites like this than you do on Reddit. There's certainly some bullshit and trolling on here as well, but a lot of honesty mixed in with it.

These are some of my thoughts based upon what I actually know of reddit.
I still think the way they segregate speaks volumes of their hypocrisy.

100% this, it's just more cleverly disguised on Reddit. They collect user data, and are able to then use it to sell targetted advertisements. Same sort of idea with Facebook/Twitter, etc.
