Trains are OK. The west coast (Seattle) is improving their infrastructure for trains and bike lanes because west coast liberals try to imitate everything europe does. The real reason though is because America was built with roads and cars being at the forefront of transportation. But with importing countless amounts of shitskins, traffic has become unbearable in many places so I reckon train and alternative transport methods will only get more popular.
Trains are gay and old technology. Planes are better and newer tech. We don’t need to bring in more Chinese to build the tracks.

For the most part, given the need for infrastructure, inevitable government meddling, and prevalence of alternatives, it would be really difficult for anyone to start up and operate a profitable high speed train, even if it were good.

Public transportation in the US is terrible in most areas because the car allowed for people to live far away. Most cities in the US are newer and the streets are all designed with cars in mind whereas European cities are much older and the streets are narrow and have more areas for people to walk. Look at Boston or New York, both old cities that were not designed with the car in mind and they have great public transportation.

All of our infrastructure money gets sucked away by contractors and consultants. They blow the budget and run behind schedule because we usually give it to either the lowest bidder or the one with the most connections and bribes to politicians. The more spread out you can make a project, the more political backing you can get, if it winds its way through every little town and village that sends its representatives to the state or federal government. That's what happened with the California high speed train. The French national railway company as well as a Japanese one both proposed privately funded plans a decade ago that would have run along one of the highways. But they lost to Bechtel (known for going decades behind schedule and billions over budget for projects that end up killing people, look up the Big Dig and Hanford cleanup they proudly advertise these stats on their site) and a bunch of other no name contractors that were American.
Because high speed transportation is impractical for long distances.

High speed trains aren't cheap
In the US there are dozens of close by cities that could be linked together in short runs with the cheapest connection and in the process eliminating hours long morning and evening commutes from tons of suburbs. That's how they built in Europe and Japan, they linked close by cities that were economic powerhouses and people flooded to the lines which then paid for expansions.
But that will never get done here and people will continue to enjoy bumper to bumper traffic moving at a blazing 25 mph average in start and stop conditions.

Just building a metro track from one city to another in my area was going to cost upwards of 4billion dollars upfront. Most major cities in the usa can't afford that kind of investment. California accepted Obamas 6billion dollar loan and the state legislators spent the money on other things.

To further my point in Texas there is a privately funded high speed rail venture using proven tech from Japan off the shelf and ready to go to connect Dallas and Houston. It's been stuck in limbo because a bunch of rail, oil, and auto companies sued them and a judge ruled that they cannot build new rails because they don't own enough existing rail. They also couldn't conduct surveys from 2017 to August 2019 because of previous rulings that they just got overturned. The powers that be don't want cheap transit since it cuts into existing revenue streams.
It would be nice for sure but we tend to have pretty low cost airfare. I may have been misinformed but I hear more and more people in Europe are flying now too.

Either HS trains need to be designed to operate on current track, or the new track needs to be able to accept current trains, it can be either, but it needs to be at least one of the two.

Texas is the only place in the US that high speed intercity passenger rail might be possible. We have airports for anything further. The East Coast has the population density but the land rights are impossible, it almost killed even the Acela trains. West Coast is to NIMBY to do anything adventurous.
