I'm curious if lefties that come here ever wonder what they would think if there wasn't punishment constantly on the table for disagreeing.

Can confirm. I consider myself a reasonable person in the sense that you can be yourself around me as long as I can be myself around you. This is hard to comprehend for most lefties (not hippies) as remotely all of their socialization involves virtue signaling and seeking approval from others. The less brainwashed ones will act like this when surrounded by others as they cave in to peer pressure easily. However, when they are around conservatives they tend to relax more and be themselves. It is an interesting phenomenon for sure. I think this why younger people tend to be more left as they are less grounded and more influenced by others, while older lefties behave like children; never growing up.
