So far the common man has only lost out in this whole turn to the east thing. You have to factor in the fact that Russia exists. If Ukraine existed in a vacuum, maybe they could eventually benefit from EU, although I doubt even that, considering how EU economy works (with all those little countries being essentially a source of manpower and a market for the big dogs like Germany and France to sell their shit). But Russia will always seek to disrupt any attempts of its neighboring countries to join the anti-Russian alliances, even if it makes everyone's life miserable including our own. It's an existential matter, and our hand is forced here. To stop doing that would mean the virtual destruction of Russia, which incidentally is another scenario in which Ukraine can prosper.

I'm a Russian and US citizen. Was born in Russia, and lived in US for most of my life. In the mid 2000s I lived in Kiev, and it was fantastic. The architecture, people, food, etc. was amazing.
The politicians however were total crooks and used the people to cause unrest while filling their pockets in a hope to flee to Europe with riches when shit went down.
Most of the people where easily manipulated into hating their former brothers.
When I first started living in Kiev, everyone openly spoke Russian, but greedy politicians started funding protest groups and tried to nationalize the people against Russia in an attempt to become part of the EU. What they forgot is that Russia and Ukraine have always mutually benefited from partnership. Russia would have some of the best soil for agriculture, and Ukraine was constantly fed gas and oil.
The politicians tried to play both sides, the EU and Russia. Russia ended up cutting off the gas and the once, very stable Ukrainian currency fell from 5 griven for a dollar to 10 griven for a dollar.
That coincided with mass political arrests and the situation exploded into what it is now.
Ukraine is a very nice country, and I genuinely hope they prosper. However, they must purge the greedy corrupt politicians that are just looking to enrich themselves and flee to the Mediterranean.
