The deep state is the state apparatus that doesn't change when the president changes. It is the high ranking military and alphabet agency personel that work tirelessly during all administrations. It's their responsibility to maintain national security and national sovereignty despite what crazy ideas the president or his administration may have. If a communist came close to getting elected tomorrow, it would fall to them to protect the Republic from communism by any means necessary. They are the unsung heroes of the Republic. Vilified by the citizens and conspiracy theorists while unironically protecting the freedoms that allow citizens and conspiracy theorists to vilify them.

This is what the deep state should be. In reality, they engage in petty internal politics and responsibility is too diffuse for anyone to really make a difference. The feedback loop between performance and reward is long to non-existent, so the roles just end up as sinecures as people defend their turf and build small little internal empires. I'm not for the current status quo, I'm not after communism end goal, since it will never happen. I'm for the process that will leave most of these manipulators and fodder dead simply by geing too close to comfort to those who come to power. Revolution eats its own children and all that jazz.
