back in the day sometimes movies sat completely done without a publisher for years. streaming services/straight to dvd gives them another avenue. some movies are willing to wait for a theatrical release. for example the movie You're Next was filmed in 2011 but sat on the self for two years without a publisher/distributor that would give it a theatrical release. it finally came out in 2013.
