I have high functioning autism and have a hunch this behaviour is the result of some kind of stress in the brain that can be calmed down with weed. Perhaps the autonomous nervous system has something to do with it as well.
When I smoke weed I feel like some kind of mental block is lifted and feel my sensory and motoric functions improve substantially, as well as being able to think much more calmly and clearly.
Absolutely worth a try.

Good question. I saw something somewhere, I cant remember where... like, the nurses would look the other way if your kid was really deformed and hopeless, and one day "you found them asphyxiated" like the coroner wouldn't look too much into it and just write "natural" or "accidental" death. I think it has something to do with autistic people living in a kind of sensory overload hell. 99% of what our perceptual systems do is filter out most of the world because there's so much sensory information that we just can't handle it all at once, we need to have tiny snapshots of it. What autistic people seem to report is that they're bombarded by noise, visual and audio noise, not that it's loud per se, but that it's filled with a huge amount of unnecessary detail that prevents you from being able to discern the helpful stuff. They tend to do things like scream because that drowns out the other noise and gives them like a simple 1 tone sound that doesn't overload the sensory system. The self harm thing is the same, the pain helps block out the sensory overload because pain is a kind of 1 dimensional thing, it hurts but it's simple.

I'd bet living in a messy as fuck house with shit all over the floor is a lot of visual noise and is that a bird chirping in the background constantly? That's probably causing a lot of problems as well. They need simple, uniform and predictable surroundings that don't change. That environment is like the worst possible environment for an autistic kid, jesus.
