I'm gonna guess that Aidid was only counting members of his own militia who were killed, whereas the overwhelming majority of combatants killed were people who spontaneously joined the fighting and didn't bother organizing properly and suffered for it.

That's stupid. Can you even begin to imagine the logistics of invading the US? Not only would you have to cross the Pacific/Atlantic and defeat the navy, but you'd have to have enough ships to keep the army supplied with no interruptions. And your army would have to be large enough to conquer a landmass larger than Europe with a population armed to the teeth. To put it into perspective, D-Day was the largest amphibious operation in history and that took years of preparation and the world's largest industrial power backing it.
