Economically, it would of course be awesome for the European Union to have free full access to Russia's resources and economy if it were part of it. And that is assuming that Russia is actually fulfilling all the democratic standards and wasn't a "guided illiberal democracy" right now anymore.
But politically, it would be an utter nightmare. Suddenly, you'd have an EU member with the most inhabitants dominating all topics, thanks to most seats in the parliament belonging to them, the council having to heed the demands of the national leader of Russia (who will most likely be the most powerful person in said room, stronger than the leader of France) or being locked in eternal veto crisis, and having a say how the commission would need to be set up to satisfy their vast region and spheres of influence in agreement with the rest of the union. And that's just without all the historical problems that the eastern EU countries had with being under the rule of Russia.

It would be extremely unlikely to work. Not impossible, but superdifficult.

The European Union does actually make a good business partner, thanks to having only to satisfy one set of standards regarding trade goods and services. Much better than having to deal individually with 28 or more countries.
Unfortunately, the EU currently has a few very corrupt and incompetent poor eastern EU members that makes membership in the EU really not a good idea for the next few decades.
Said poor very corrupt and incompetent poor eastern EU members are also not really happy and friendly towards Switzerland, because our parliament threatened to withhold our paltry enlargement contribution money (a mere 1.5 billion dollars spread out between 10 years) because of the dispute regarding the framework agreements.
Since the poor and very corrupt eastern EU countries are said beneficiaries of that contribution money, they're of course not happy at all that the tiny little outsider Switzerland is being pissy about it, despite having lots of favorable bilateral agreement with the EU (which it only had because back then, everyone thought Switzerland would then later enter the EU).
Practically, Switzerland is already an EU member, just without any political say. On the other hand, we only have to pay a mere 150 million dollar each year for access to the single market, and we get to shitpost on all the poor eastern EU countries.
So, perhaps not joining is still currently a better idea. Perhaps in a few decades, assuming that the EU still exists, and if the poor highly corrupt eastern EU countries weren't that bad anymore, we'd be inclined to think about entering again.
