Because groups typically organize themselves around identity not class and the political rancor today is about race.
As for the workers as a group in the U.S they are more or less expendable. Most don't have advanced skills and heavy industry has been outsourced so work stoppages and things like that are impossible, isolated or ineffective. Any outright insubordination usually leads to immediate termination since private unions are rare or non-existent. Add in the fact they are usually living paycheck to paycheck with massive costs and inflation for basic needs like housing or health care and you have a situation where workers have no leverage and no ability to organize. Now class solidarity among workers would be a good thing but the left is laser focused on demonizing whites, fringe cultural issues and mass importing scab labor from the third world. The Libtardarians on the other hand refuse to deviate from free market orthodoxy and are thus wedded to the status quo and essentially bootlickers for the Neo-Liberal world order.

Class consciousness isn't real. Nobody actually identifies by class, they identify by race first, culture and religion second, and so on. The only exception to this are the sort of 100-115 IQ mediocre urban intellects who are able to detach themselves from natural group awareness and fabricate a wholly new one that ignores everything that normal people identify with.

Ironically, class consciousness is itself a constructed identity. Race is the most natural one there is.
