I think it's literally anyone that disagrees with a leftist, but I'm not sure. The meaning always changes. I remember at one point it literally meant "people who read Breitbart and follow Milo Yiannopoulos" and I was like "oh, OK, cool, I'll be alt right then, I think Milo is funny". Now it's something different. It's been through about 1000 alterations since then. Something something about Charlottesville. Something something about Richard Spencer. Something something about Steve Bannon. Something something about Donald Trump. Really, IDK.

It is. I remember when the term first exploded i wasnt 100% familiar with it because i hadnt been keeping up with Jow Forums
Some leftard just outright started calling me that for no real reason.
Ironically he also threatened to rape a woman so pretty much outed himself as a pos.

It meant gamergate at one point too. That term started getting popular with gamergate. I remember hearing it and thinking "yeah, I am kind of a right-wing dude, and I am pretty disillusioned by the establishmen Republican party, I feel like the term fits me pretty well". IDK. I mean there was literally a time when people on Jow Forums were openly calling themselves "alt-right" I remember. And Breitbart was publishing articles about alt-right, and being alt-right, and what it meant. And Breitbart articles were getting posted to Jow Forums pretty regularly, along with Milo Yiannopoulos stuff. I mean, in that context the term is pretty tame. But then once Steve Bannon got hired in Trump's white house they tried to twist that quote from him, "lets turn Breitbart into a platform for the alt-right" into being something racist and insidious, so everyone started backing away from the term again, cuz Republicans and conservatives are mostly pussies.

In fairness, I'm pretty sure it was Richard Spencer that originally coined the term many years ago, but like I said it's just gone through so many iterations, and so many meanings that WTF does that even matter anymore?

Yeah there is something very suspicious about it. Spencer supposedly coined it but the first i noticed it was as a general label feminists were using to attack mra related sites.
I don't know if people recall back during Elliot Rodger the feminists started spazzing out hard about PUAs but it didn't stick.
The same sort of people latched onto alt-right and used it as broadly as possible to mean basically anyone they don't like or even a hint not progressive.
Like god damn actually leftleaning people get labeled alt-right.
It is just way to convenient as an obvious baited trap.
The scam goes like this in my view

Yeah exactly.
And I think the term really terrified the left existentially because it was really perfect in a lot of ways, seeing as the Republican party has genuinely changed a lot over the last few years, becoming much more of a party that is in line with ordinary American's views, and having much broader appeal.

I think the left didn't want anyone hearing that term and saying "wait a minute, you mean there is a new option? A new and emerging right-wing movement? Cropping up in the Republican party? One that is much more in line with my values and beliefs?"

That would have been existential doom to the left. So they honed in the racial aspect and kept on pushing on it endlessly until eventually it was STRICTLY associated with racism.

The left always does this with language. They win the language war.

It's kind of like Saul Alinsky said in Rules For Radical "If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside."

Seriously, can you specifically point to any semblance of a hierarchy, power structure, ethos, etc?

The issue was leftist progressivism began being attacked on multiple fronts by a diverse range of people.
People that didnt neatly fit into a caricature of a neonazi larper or conservative strawman.
Like just regular jeans wearing people.
So they needed a new broad term to tar as many people as possible.
Then conveniently all these people no one had ever heard of appeared declaring themselves alt-right and acting stupid.
The term is pretty insidious imo as used by the media I heard on the tv a claim a rural party was being infiltrated by altright extremists and just laughing.

Antifa are far left wing anti fascists. The whole point of their stupid group is to deplatform white nationalists and alt right conservatives.

There isn't made up term for an organisation that doesn't exist.
Like how leftists try to say Jow Forums is honestly an organisation.
The new disturbing one is that white men are all affiliated terrorists despite there being no actual organisation, just flat out discrimination by race and sex.
