The thing is that Putin has been popular because he managed to end chaos that took place in 90s (Russia was basically an ancap country during this time) and he won war against Chechnya. These were two the most important things he's done, but it was relatively easy to do since the oil prices (Russia depends on them a lot) and relationship with the West were very good during that time. Next leader will become president when the oil prices and economy in general wouldn't be that promising and the West would be way less friendly, so it would be really difficult for him to get support of the people to ensure authoritarian regime.

Russia has already been under "softer" muslim invasion for decades and Putin's government doesn't care. However it is afraid of Russian nationalists more than of any other political force. So any kind of nationalist movements don't live long in Russia, all these whining liberals get way more freedom form the government compared to nationalists. In other words, current Russian government already does everything to supress nationalist movements, but the liberals who might be next leaders would be smarter and more oppressive.

How funny, Putin is more like a neocon if we try to compare it with western politicians. For example, he doesn't give a shit about Russians who are being opressed in post Soviet countries, he doesn't do anything to bring them to Russia. He was"nationalist" for a while when it was important to take Crimea and send Russian nationalists to die in Donbass. Once all the government interests were satisfied, he stopped giving a fuck about Russians again. Russian nationalists are opressed more than any other political group again and so on.
There are different kinds of them. Most of Russian muslims, who are Tatars and Bashkirs, aren't problematic at all. However, the ones from Chechnya and Dagestan or from Central Asia tend to commit too much crimes and acts of terrorism.
